Participant Biographies and Project Descriptions
Frank Ritenour
Frank and his wife Marlene have been professional photographers in the Orange County area for forty-five years. The Ritenours support the local arts in their community with memberships in the San Clemente Art Association and the Dana Point Fine Art Association. Frank takes great pride in having run a successful business in San Clemente for many years. He was inspired by teaching his grandchildren photography and would now like to give back to his community by teaching and mentoring underserved youth.
With Frank’s instruction, young teens will learn the art of developing a photographer’s eye, how to use photo-processing tools, and how to print and display photo-art. The children, who all come from low income neighborhoods, will take part in photo shoots working in teams, and then learn to perfect their product on computers with the use of Photoshop software. Frank would like to teach the teens in his classes that, “Good art doesn’t show you something, it makes you feel something”, and “The process of inspiration comes from the mind and heart”. He also feels that learning photography can teach a young person a valuable trade, and plans to take the teens to community art shows at the end of each two-month session to sell their photographic art. The Boys and Girls Club of San Clemente will be the site for Frank’s twice a week evening workshops in photography.
