Participant Biographies and Project Descriptions
Chanara Casey Richmond
Chanara is a teacher, singer, composer, recording artist, and producer. Her credits include nationally televised musical productions including composing and signing for the Celtic Children’s Musical, “Marigold and the Leprechaun King.” Chanara has taught singing and performance skills for over twenty years and has played numerous roles in Bay Area Operas. She regularly offers community toning events (singing without words in community with others), and she is the founder of the non-profit organization, TONE FOR PEACE, a non-profit that is dedicated to cultivate, nurture, and support the experience of peace. On a volunteer basis Chanara has performed musically in senior homes since college. She holds a Bachelor of Music degree and a Master of Music degree in Vocal Performance.
Using her background in music and singing, Chandra is facilitating sing along programs for assisted care seniors who are physically or cognitively unable to leave their residences. The goal of these programs is to have fun and encourage social interaction in this greatly underserved population. In addition to serious health concerns, many of these seniors have lost a spouse and have had to relocate to be near their children. Singing aloud and together with others is a very effective way to alleviate depression and isolation. This generation of seniors grew up singing and singing the music that conveys their core beliefs seems to strengthen them at a very deep level.” “Singing,” Chanara states, “Has also proven to have physical as well as therapeutic benefits—to sing, people need to breathe deeply, this releases endorphins in the brain which imparts a sense of well being.”
