Participant Biographies and Project Descriptions
Lynn Underwood
Lynn has a notable and varied background. She is a teacher who uses arts integrated teaching techniques to enhance school curriculums, inspire students, and to train educators on the benefits of incorporating multiple-intelligence, kinesthetic, and expressive arts into the classroom. Lynn holds a B.A. in Psychology and a Master of Arts in Expressive Arts in Education and Coaching. For many years, she has conducted workshops and seminars to help children and adults use the visual and expressive arts to increase their communication, social and conflict resolution skills. These experiences, and her work with women in recovery, prompted Lynn to work with women and children suffering from domestic violence.
Lynn is teaching visual arts activities to women and their children at the Women’s Resource Center, Oceanside. The Center provides supportive services, counseling, shelter, and education to women, men, and children involved in or threatened by domestic violence and abuse. Lynn is doing a variety of art media including collage, visual journaling, painting and clay with the hope of introducing an art form that resonates with each individual. Art making together in a group will enable the participants to build positive and supportive relations with others, help them to relax, and build their self-esteem as they develop new skills and interests. “My wish,” Lynn states, “Is by creating an environment where everyone is personally regarded, encouraged, and respected, that the participants will have a break from their daily stresses, and be in the moment and have fun.”
