Participant Biographies and Project Descriptions
Randy Renner
Randy began his renowned performing and studio recording career over thirty-five years ago. During these years, his musical skills and talents lead to work with members of popular bands such as the Eagles, Supertramp, Jimmy Buffett and Nickel Creek. Randy has produced and recorded dozens of full-length cd’s by artists from all over Southern California. Always having a desire to play and to teach music, he also performs with a number of groups including the San Diego Music Award winning band “Bordertown,” “The Fabulous Woodies,” and “Blackbyrd,” all while giving private drum and percussion lessons from home and at various workshops throughout San Diego. It is Randy’s expertise in staging charity events including the “Hands-Off” concert to raise money and awareness of child abuse, and his twenty years of knowledge and experience obtained while setting up performances with students of Encinitas Country Day School that helped to inspire his Senior Artist Project.
Randy is teaching teenage boys and girls sound engineering and instrumentation at The Boys and Girls Club of Oceanside. The neighborhoods served by The Club have a high percentage of families living below the poverty line. With this comes low educational attainment, pervasive substance abuse, a high percentage of illiterate students, and for some gang involvement—all adding to the teen’s struggles to succeed in both school and life. In the after school program students will take part in music recording, learn percussion and percussion techniques, live and studio mixing, and be taught how to execute live shows and conduct event planning. These skills, Randy hopes, will inspire the teens and help to direct their energy and time towards doing something positive, entertaining, creative, and productive. “With the wealth of information I’ve gained in all fields of music, it is my heart’s desire to make use of these skills to help make the world a better place, and who better to help than the young people of today.”
