Participant Biographies and Project Descriptions

Roger Turk
Ever since winning first prize at a county fair when Roger was in first grade, art has been a part of his life—as an artist, art teacher, and as a life long art student. Roger developed and designed K-12 art curriculum for the art students he taught for seven years in Wisconsin. His credits and background also include winning awards in national poster contests, earning commissions to paint murals for public places, and, most recently, teaching watercolor classes at the T-Born Studio, Carlsbad, and at the Mission Branch Library in Oceanside. Through Roger’s energy, skill, and patience he’s found success teaching art and inspiring students both young and old.

Those who serve in the military live under a set of firm rules. Art making is a way to relieve stress, it can be therapeutic when living and working under pressure, and allows one to find a sense of freedom.
At Marine Corps Base Camp Pendleton Roger is providing free fine art classes for active duty military and their families. Roger’s classes fill a great need as the base does not currently provide any fine art instruction. Roger looks forward to introducing the fundamentals of art to this population and giving them a foundation to effectively communicate through fine art. He states, “This project is important to me as I remember well when serving in the U.S. Army overseas how art helped relieve the stress of my day to day life. Art strengthened my self-worth and gave me joy when I had time to practice.” Roger’s goal is to help those serving our country enjoy their free time and to use art to reflect and communicate their observations of the world they live in. Roger intends to have an art exhibition of the participants work to be on view at a facility at Camp Pendleton.
