Participant Biographies and Project Descriptions
Ron Woskow
Ron has been teaching and performing as a classical guitarist in the San Diego area for over 35 years. After earning a college degree in Mathematics, Ron chose a different life direction and pursued a career in the music field. Ron has performed at many popular San Diego venues including the Hotel del Coronado, the La Valencia Hotel, and the Rancho Santa Fe Inn. He has expertise in several guitar styles such as electric, blues, Brazilian jazz, Hawaiian slack key and Ukulele.
Ron has chosen to offer his time, musical talent and energy to retired seniors living on very limited incomes. For the past year Ron has been teaching ukulele twice a week at the San Marcos Senior Center, and offering private lessons. Through a second Senior Artist Project grant Ron is excited to continue his classes and to be working with this appreciative group and states, “The social interaction of playing with and singing in a group environment always has a beneficial effect in any group, much more so for seniors who can be isolated and alone.” The Senior Center initially had very enthusiastic response to Ron’s ukulele instruction, and for the past year he has taught over a hundred people. To provide the seniors with a goal to work toward, Ron builds the group’s repertoire of songs so the participants are performance ready. This past year Ron’s students and their self-titled ukulele band, “The Stone Groove Strummers,” participated in numerous performances and in-house community events.
