Tartan Scholars Program
Established in 2003, The Tartan Scholars program creates opportunities for high-achieving, low-income minority students by providing four year scholarships to attend St. Margaret’s Episcopal High School in San Juan Capistrano, CA. The program also enriches the educational experience of all St. Margaret’s students by increasing diversity at the school. The Picerne Family Foundation established this program with a six-year grant that funded the first fifteen Tartan Scholars.
Of the first five Tartan Scholars who graduated in June 2007, one Scholar earned the prestigious Gates Millennium Scholarship to fund her college tuition, housing, and other expenses for up to 10 years of higher education. She is currently engaged in pre-med studies at Stanford University. All five of the Tartan Scholars who graduated in spring 2008 are continuing their education at well-respected schools, including Stanford University, Barnard College, University of California, San Diego, California State University, Chico, and Swarthmore College.
