2008 St. Margaret’s Tartan Scholar

Elmer Florez – University of California, San Diego

Elmer is a 12-letter Varsity athlete at St. Margaret’s, earning a varsity letter in three sports all four years.  In soccer, he was the 2008 Academy League leading scorer and was selected 1st Team All-CIF.  In football, he played varsity all four years and started the past two years on the undefeated CIF Champion squad that currently holds the longest active winning streak of any high school football team in California at 28-0.  He also earned 2nd team All-League recognition for his performance on the Track & Field team in the discus and relay events.  Elmer’s family moved far away from St. Margaret’s early in his school career and he commuted by train, a three-hour round-trip, to maintain his school commitments on campus.  He is involved in the Big Brothers Big Sisters Club, served as a school year tutor for Breakthrough San Juan Capistrano, and was on the school newspaper staff.  He was recently honored as the recipient of the Board of Trustees Award, given to the senior who “has grown the most both as a person and as a student, and has taken advantage of many opportunities for involvement.”  Academically, he received Headmaster’s Honors every semester at St. Margaret’s.  He completed his Independent Senior Project as an intern at an engineering firm.  Elmer was admitted to University of California Davis, University of California Irvine, University of California San Diego, University of Oregon and University of Washington.  He plans to study engineering at UCSD.
